The neolithic splint mines in Spiennes are a listed World UNESCO heritage site.

They extend over 100 acres and are one of the largest and most ancient mines in Europe.

A new visitor's centre will be opening in 2014

This new building, designed to showcase the Neolithic mines, will also offer permanent exhibitions and educational walks.

You will also be able to go as far as 8 metres deep and take a peek at what it was like underground, although the mines are not open any longer.

Spiennes is a well-known prehistoric site in Europe. There is evidence of human presence since the Palaeolithic age.

During the Neolithic, between 4200 and 2500 BC, a large number of flint mines were dug and can now be seen thanks to some brilliant work by archaeologists.
