Mons, European Capital of Culture 2015


The city of Mons, cultural capital of Wallonia, has an impressive heritage. It has also been chosen as European Capital of Culture 2015.

 

Mons possesses numerous listed sites such as Mons Belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Mons Town Hall or the Treasury of the St-Waudru's Collegiate Church.

 

Every year, at the start of the summer, Mons and its Grand Place are the main stage for a remarkable folkloric event listed by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage: the Doudou: Golden Carriage, Lumeçon Battle & Ducasse Sainte-Waudru.


Just a few kilometres outside the city centre, lies the superbly restored industrial Grand-Hornu Mining Site: Industrial Archaeology & Temporary Exhibitions a UNESCO World Heritage Site.


This site houses the MAC's - Museum of Contemporary Art of the French-speaking Community, a museum hosting remarkable temporary exhibitions, which houses remarkable temporary exhibitions.
